The Southern Cluster is defined by the Hammersmith & City line viaduct traversing the site tthe shopping centre to the south and Westcross Route and West London Rail Line running along the eastern boundary.
Community Centre and Public Piazza
The proposal is to raise the buildings off the ground, on top of a plinth, to elevate them above the surrounding infrastructure and dominating scale of the shopping centre. The top of the plinth creates a space for a raised public piazza and can support a 'Media Tube' link from the shopping centre, to the proposed Hammersmith - City station and White City station. This will link both stations together and connect the shopping centre to the new development. The plinth will house a number of community facilities such as a completely accessible leisure centre that opens out to the open space.
The public piazza is defined by a circular residential building, the shape of this building was generated with reference to the BBC building opposite on Wood Lane. This geometry is reinforced by another circular building along Wood Lane that supports the 'Media Tube' as it connects to White City Station.
The strong references to the BBC helps to integrate the new development with the local identity and community.
